Long-Run/High-Volume Metal Stamping

long-run/high-volume metal stamping

The Westlake Tool & Die team is able to meet the diverse needs of our clients, and that includes long-run stamping projects. If you have a project in mind that requires a high volume of parts, our team is ready to get to work.

Our Long-Run Metal Stamping Process

  • Quotation and DFM review - The customer will send us drawings, volumes, and materials specs and we will supply a quote and flag any design-for-manufacturability opportunities.
  • Tooling and samples - We will design and build the tooling in-house (when quoted separately), then run sample parts for design/tooling validation & customer approval.
  • Material acquisition - Our team places coil/flat stock orders through local service centers to hit cost and lead-time targets.
  • Router/traveler creation - We generate a detailed traveler documenting machine size, tool size, feed length, material width/spec, required feed and material-handling equipment, inspection plan, and any outside processes.
  • Press selection and setup - We slot the job into the optimal press - as we have multiple suitable presses and can move tooling across machines as needed - and factor in scheduling needs, part requirements, and efficiency.
  • High-volume production runs - We run large batches for best cost/throughput, keeping the line optimized and consistent across the full volume.
  • Outside processing as required - We manage local subcontractors, such as those for heat treating, plating, and more, as needed. Parts are verified upon return (certs + dimensional checks).
  • In-process controls - Our operators use dedicated gauging for critical dimensions and follow statistically based inspection frequencies (AQL-driven).
  • Final and last-piece verification - At this stage, first-article layout is documented, setup checks are recorded, and last-piece inspection confirms conformity at run end.
  • Inventory, warehousing, and shipping - We can warehouse finished goods and manage safety stock, shipping to your pull schedule.

How We Stand Out for High-Volume Stamping

  • Flexibility across presses - We can move a tool among several presses to meet schedules and optimize throughput.
  • Local supplier network in Cleveland - Our proximity to heat treaters and processors shortens lead times and reduces logistics risks and costs.
  • Stocking programs - We'll run big batches, hold inventory, and ship to release, while many competitors avoid the warehousing aspect.
  • Material cost leverage - We can group material buys (e.g., same thickness/type across programs) to negotiate better pricing.
  • Automotive-level documentation on demand - PPAP, FMEA, and IMDS provided to your spec.

Benefits of Long-Run Metal Stamping

  • Ideal for diverse industries - The high repeatability and strict quality control of long-run stamping benefits varied fields , including food and beverage, plumbing, oil and gas, solar and renewable energy, and power transmission.
  • Varied material possibilities - Our team can work with materials like stainless steel, aluminum, brass, copper, food-grade metals, nitrile-coated materials, and much more.
  • Lowest unit cost at scale - The approach allows tooling to be amortized over high volumes, and facilitates efficient coil-fed production.
  • High throughput and consistency - Tight, repeatable dimensions are attainable across large batches.
  • Shorter, effective lead times - Big runs combined with warehousing enable fast, pull-based fulfillment.
  • Material efficiency - Strategic, consolidated buys implemented alongside optimized strip usage reduce waste and cost.
  • Simplified logistics - One large run leads to predictable inventory, which in turn leads to fewer changeovers.

Quality Control Measures

To ensure that our customers receive only the finest services and end products, our team uses an ISO 9001-based system and implements a range of quality control processes, which include:

  • First Article Inspection (FAI) with full layout and customer-specific documentation when needed
  • Documented setup checks every time a job is set
  • In-process inspection using dedicated gauges for critical features
  • Last-piece inspection at run end
